Dr. Maria Arias came to the practice of medicine as a second career, after a successful career in nursing as both an intensive care nurse and nurse anesthetist. She realized she had a lifelong desire to become a physician.

Dr. Arias chose gynecology as her specialty because it bridges healthcare with surgical practice. She also was drawn by the numerous advances in women's healthcare at the time she was choosing her residency.

Dr. Arias sees patients of all age groups, including women who are pre-menopause and in menopause. She views her role as that of an interpreter. "The art of medicine is where I excel," Dr. Arias says. "Communication skills are everything."

She finds satisfaction in helping her patients understand their health issues. She believes she has a talent for breaking down information and presenting it in a way that is easy to understand.

Dr. Arias also places great importance on establishing a good rapport with her patients.

"I want to find out who my patients are as people," says Dr. Arias. "Taking the time to do that makes a big difference in the physician - patient relationship, and there's nothing more enjoyable than feeling that you've clicked with someone and been able to help."

Dr. Arias says that AWS has wholeheartedly embraced technology as a way to provide better communication and services to its patients, which is something patients appreciate.

Dr. Arias is most proud when she thinks about the number of patients who have sought her out over the years. "My practice has grown mostly by word of mouth," says Dr. Arias. "I'm proud of that, and it makes you feel that you're doing something right."
